Title: “Map” (2016)

Medium: charcoal, acrylic, ink on natural paper.

This piece is inspired by the urge to simplify and work only in black and white. By reducing the colour and gestural movement employed I found that I was more engaged with the piece and enjoyed the process of painting mindfully as a form of meditation. I felt a sensation of peace and concentration whilst working slowly and precisely, a feeling which I wanted to transmit visually in the lines and marks on the paper. It was also an opportunity to work with the already existing spaces present on the material and with the properties of the material itself, adding to the sense of oneness with the image.

Painting made with acrylic, ink and mixed media on beautiful watercolour paper. Inspired by the lustrous colours of autumn and the clashes of orange, blue and gold that provide a fiery insight into the emotions of the moment. The painting is made in the spiritual abstract style where the strokes, tone and form are dictated by the moment, intensity, connection with the present and spontaneous gesture.

This piece was made through an exploration into transience and ephemeral creation. The mural was cexecuted by painting 'blindly' on a sheet before peeling it off to reveal what lay behind, exploring the concept of spontaneous control.
